Re-cycled?
Everything around me is in constant decay. My home and all of its contents are broken. After every weekend of friends drinking I find another favourite mug cracked or with a missing handle. The toilet seat is broke and lying piss stained yellow on the bathroom floor. The shower pull cord has been ripped out of the ceiling. My key is bent and I can never get in through the front door.
Life is full of irritation and annoyance. I try to fight back daily. One of the best ways I find to stay afloat and above the chaos is to try and repair everything that explodes or collapses in my home. Super gluing mugs and stitching yet another heavy metal patch on the arse of my favourite black jeans after another freecoaster accident are weekly events. They are also the events that help me claw back life and let me stay on top-mentally undefeated. Apart from electrician’s tape and the odd bits of carpet and wood lying around my flat I have virtually no traditional DIY materials at my disposal. So I look to the things that I have in abundance to repair my life commodities. This is where bike components have to step up, being bent into other forms and used for the tasks they were never destined to complete. ![]() Months of Ratty´s loose-cous experiments, chilly garlic and tomato nuclear flambe and culinary nerve gas outings resulted in a stripped wok handle. I sorted this out by spacing the threads with the 17mm axle nut of my recently defunct KHE Geisha hub. ![]() After an internal battle of wills and against my strongest vegetarian judgement I decided to buy a real leather belt in Brighton. 2 years later and pow the buckle hole blows out. I got like Macgyver and used a 10mm wheel washer and a 5mm allen chainring bolt from a Sugino spider to create a rudimentary reinforced buckle hole. I had zero funds for a canvas but had a good idea for a robot painting. Carmine hooked me up with this old pub black board to paint. It worked out really good but I was at a loss when it came to hanging it because it weighed so much. A couple of screws a wardrobe door hinge a small piece of rim tape and a length of KMC 510 chain soon solved the problem. ![]() My bedroom door is one of those extra heavy sprung loaded fire doors. This coupled with the brand new and slippery laminate flooring meant that a standard door wedge just wasnt going to cut it. I solved the problem with an old Odyssey 14t cog from a multi piece cassette driver. ![]() This is a classic problem with a classic answer. No bottle opener? Keep a metal pedal in the kitchen drawer.
